I had originally wanted to post this DIY  3.1 Phillip Lim boots last year but never got around to capturing it so please forgive me if the boots look a bit worn down, I couldn’t resist wearing them. The original boots are no longer available and was exclusively made for men’s, but I think girls could totally rock the twisted rope look. Seeing as I would never be able to afford the real deal and I probably wouldn’t fit into the men’s sizing due to tiny feet I did what I do best, and made it myself! This is probably the first time my knot tying skills from those good old Girl Guide days have finally become useful once more!

Original Boots: retailed at $660

DIY 3.1 Phillip Lim Tee

It’s been a hell of a summer, finally getting around to posting this Phillip Lim Tee DIY tutorial I photographed all the way back in June (sorry guys!). I guess it’s also good timing since 3.1 Phillip Lim for Target is coming out soon, so in the spirit of celebrating Phillip Lim’s brilliance, on-wards with the tutorial.

Word of warning: This is not a cheap DIY and is quite time consuming, so gather some patience and the result will be fantastic!

What you’ll need:

  • White tee (mine’s from H&M)
  • Rhinestones
  • Beads
  • Grommets
  • Needle and Thread
  • Paint – Red and Black & Paint Brush
  • Stencil (artwork file HERE)
  • Mesh (optional)
Trace letters onto shirt
Paint in the letters
Let the paint dry before continuing onto the next step
Layout gems and grommets in desired flower like patterns
Sew on the long beads around the neckline
Sew on the gems and beads in desired patterns.
Install grommets and you’re done. Optional: replace sleeves with mesh sleeves.

  1. Print out the stencil, cut and trace it onto your white tee.
  2. Take your paint and fill in your letters
  3. Mark and place where you would like your rhinestones and beads to be on the tee. I used this image for reference
  4. Take your thread and needle and sew down the rhinestones and beads.
  5. Take your grommets and place them in their desired spots.
  6. Install the grommets
  7. OPTIONAL: Replace the sleeves with mesh fabric to get an exact replica of the original 3.1 Phillip Lim Tee.

DIY Inspiration: Cut Out and Bound

It’s Net-a-porter’s semi annual clearance, so now you know what my home page will be set to for the next few weeks. All wonderful designer items on sale at a price I can potentially covet at. While going through the site, I realized that these 3.1 Phillip Lim cut out leather and stingray ankle boots were looking vaguely familiar. Of course it was reminiscent of the Zara close toe strappy sandals from their TRF Lookbook which I’ve seen previously; silly me for not paying attention to the 3.1 Phillip Lim runway!
Shoes on the left are from Zara (here); shoes on the right from 3.1 Phillip Lim (here)
I definitely love the hits of colour and metallics in the 3.1 Phillip Lim version and it is a simple DIY with the TRF shoes. Grab some paint, a brush and some drying time patience (which can be like watching paint dry). See what I did there??? Yup, I’m pun-tastic!
